How to Increase Physical Activity in Your Child's Life
Childhood obesity is on the rise. Coupled with a balanced diet, physical activity can both prevent and reduce obesity. Parents play a vital role in influencing their children to choose an active, healthy lifestyle. With a few simple steps, the whole family will be on their way towards healthy, energetic living.
Step 1
Walk with your children. Walking is a great type of exercise and is often free. Add variety to your walks by discovering new places to explore.Greenways and parks are available in nearly every city. Add fun to your walks by playing games, such as I Spy, while walking. Entice your children with a walking challenge. Perhaps adding some reward at the end of the walk will keep them walking longer and further.
Step 2
Play together. Play outside. Bounce with your children on the trampoline. Ride bikes. Shoot hoops with them in the driveway. Go to the park together for a game of football, baseball, or Frisbee.
Step 3
Invest in some family exercise and sports equipment. Local Goodwill stores,craigslist, and yardsales are great place to find great bargains on gently used equipment. Rollerblades, bikes, balls, and all kinds of equipment for organized sports can be found there. Take your children on a treasure hunt for these items and watch their excitement grow.
Step 4
If you can afford to, consider a membership to a family friendly gym. Classes,sports programs, and opportunities abound in a gym. My children enjoy swimming for hours at the YMCA.
Step 5
Consider organized sports. Great programs are available in a range of price ranges. The local YMCA or Parks and Rec have a variety of programs available.
The challenge and motivation from peers keeps kids moving for a long time.
Step 6
Make fitness a priority in your own life. Your children will follow your example. Include them as often as possible in physical activity. Make it fun.Make it consistent. Make physical activity a lifestyle for your family.
